The Kingi Ihaka Research Centre is an independent charitable company committed to exploring and advancing Māori expressions of Christianity in Aotearoa. While affiliated with Te Pīhopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau, we are self-governing and accountable to our communities and kaupapa.

Revd Dr Paul Reynolds
Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Rēhia

Paul is an Anglican minister in Te Hāhi Mihinare, kaupapa Māori health researcher, and emerging Indigenous theologian. He was raised in Taumarunui and educated at St Stephen’s School, Waikato University, and Simon Fraser University in Canada, where he completed his PhD.

He is Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Kingi Ihaka Research Centre, alongside Bishop Te Kitohi Pikaahu and Archdeacon Katene Eruera. Paul previously served as Acting Dean (Te Ahorangi), Lecturer, and Research Director at Te Piri Poho, St John’s Theological College (2019–2023), and has held roles across several Hui Amorangi and at the national and international levels of the Anglican Church, including Secretary of the Anglican Indigenous Network.

He co-founded Te Atawhai o Te Ao in Whanganui (2005–2014), and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga. His work continues to centre kaupapa Māori research, faith, social justice, and the wellbeing of whānau, hapū and iwi.

Archdeacon Katene Eruera
Muriwhenua, Ngāpuhi

Katene is an Anglican minister in Te Haahi Mihinare, researcher, and educator from Kaitaia in the Far North. He is Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Kingi Ihaka Research Centre, alongside Bishop Te Kitohi Pikaahu and Rev Dr Paul Reynolds. His work centres on Māori and Indigenous leadership, kaupapa Māori research, and the intersection of faith, culture, and social wellbeing.

A former Dean and Principal of St John’s Theological College (2014–2023), Katene is currently a PhD candidate at AUT, researching Indigenous and Christian leadership models. He has a background in law, theology, politics, and anthropology, and previously worked as a criminal lawyer, parish priest, educator and military chaplain. He also serves as Archdeacon and Vicar-General in Te Pīhopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau.
